This week our nation celebrates the freedom to read anything we want to! Banned Books Week is a time to think about censorship and freedom and your rights as an American citizen.
Is it surprising to you that books are still banned? Check out the list that the American Library Association puts out every year for an eye-opening reminder that there are plenty of people out there who would like to control what you are allowed to read!
Banned Books Week has been going strong since 1982 – making this it’s 30th anniversary!
So go read a banned or challenged book and exercise your 1st Ammendment rights! There are plenty of them to choose from in the NVC library – just look for the “Caution” tape on our bookshelves, or visit our display in the middle of the library, or go ask your friendly librarian at the Reference Desk to help you find one!
If you really want to learn more about banned or challenged books come take part in our “Banned Books Scavenger Hunt” here at the NVC library – a great way to educate yourself about the importance having the freedom to read anything you want to! The exercise sheets are available at the Reference Desk.
Your NVC Librarians look forward to seeing you soon!
